چکیده
In this paper, we estimate the stresses and strains from the equatorial region down to the apex of the heart by modeling the passive left ventricle as a frustrum of a thick hollow cone. Large deformation theory has been employed in this analysis. Furthermore, the eeects of residual stresses and the anisotropy due to muscle ber orientation have been included. It is observed that circumferential stress, which is the most important physiologically, decreases considerably at the endocardium and is more evenly distributed through the wall when residual stresses are taken into account. The stresses also decrease as we go from the equatorial region to the apex. Because heart muscles physically have residual stresses, the consequent lower stress gradient through the wall enhances the diastolic function of the left ventricle.

Regional passive ventricular stress-strain relations during development of altered loads in chick embryo.
Mechanical load influences embryonic ventricular growth, morphogenesis, and function. However, little is known about changes in regional passive ventricular properties during the development of altered mechanical loading conditions in the embryo. We tested the hypothesis that regional mechanical loads are a critical determinant of embryonic ventricular passive properties. We measured biaxial pa...
متن کاملStresses and Strains in the Left Ventricular Wall Approximated as a Thick Conical Shell Using Large Deformation Theory
In this paper, stress and strain equations are developed for the left ventricle mainly to nd the innuence of the ventricle's shape on wall stresses. Here, the ventricle is assumed to be a thick-walled truncated conical shell and large elastic deformation theory is applied. Our model is compared to corresponding results approximating the left ventricle as a spherical shell. Clinically relevant p...
متن کاملEffect of Laminar Orthotropic Myofiber Architecture on Regional Stress and Strain in the Canine Left Ventricle
Recent morphological studies have demonstrated a laminar (sheet) organization of ventricular myofibers. Multiaxial measurements of orthotropic myocardial constitutive properties have not been reported, but regional distributions of three-dimensional diastolic and systolic strains relative to fiber and sheet axes have recently been measured in the dog heart by Takayama et al. [30]. A three-dimen...
متن کاملDynamic Stresses and Strains in the Left Ventricular Wall based on Large Deformation Theory
In this paper, elastodynamic large deformation theory is applied to calculate dynamic stresses and strains in the left ventricular wall. Researchers usually neglect inertial forces and consider the wall to be thin. In this work, we do not make these simplifying assumptions, although we consider the ventricle to be spherical. We examine the innuence the inertial term has on stresses, strains, st...
متن کاملPassive material properties of intact ventricular myocardium determined from a cylindrical model.
The equatorial region of the canine left ventricle was modeled as a thick-walled cylinder consisting of an incompressible hyperelastic material with homogeneous exponential properties. The anisotropic properties of the passive myocardium were assumed to be locally transversely isotropic with respect to a fiber axis whose orientation varied linearly across the wall. Simultaneous inflation, exten...
